In listening to my police and fire scanner, when the dispatcher is dispatching fire engines, they will say?
for example, Engine 33 is "RIT". What does RIT stand for?
I live in Indianapolis, Indiana and this would be for the IFD, Indianapolis Fire Department.
RIT is commonly a Rapid Intervention Team, usually one company designated by the incident commander to stand by in the event that a firefighter is trapped. This gained popularity after the Worcester fire in 1999 where six firefighters were killed. In Boston this unit is called the FAST (Firefighter Assist Search Team) and the assignment rotates at every fire.
