FireWire- IEEE 1394 interface by Apple
In 1995, Apple presented the new IEEE 1394 serial bus interface standard also called as FireWire. The latest Apple invention called for high speed communication and excellent data-transfer speeds. FireWire technology is commonly used in home computers as well as other multimedia devices such as digital cameras and aeronautical applications.
Other than FireWire, the interface is known as i.LINK at Sony and Lynx at Texas Instruments. Serial IEEE 1394 interface is now globally adopted as High Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance (HANA) standard. Serial IEEE 1394 or FireWire replaced parallel SCSI connection in many multimedia applications. FireWire interface is more useful as well as economical as it is cost-effective and requires simple to implement.
FireWire technology finds its way into digital camcorder applications such as all mainstream products by Sony, Panasonic, etc. Many personal computers come with built-in FireWire ports that can be used with select camcorder models. Sony and Apple products including laptops and computers come with built-in FireWire/i.LINK ports that can be used with their external appliances.
FireWire 400 connection is also known as 6-circuit alpha connector or IEEE 1394-1995 variant. A common FireWire 400 port is capable of transmitting data at 100/200 or 400 Mbit/half-duplex. But, cable length is limited to just 4.5 meters. But, up to 16 cables can be serially connected to form a chain that can transfer data at same speed using active repeaters or external hubs.
FireWire 800 was introduced in early 20th century with IEEE 1394b-2002 protocol. Apple S800 protocol was globally accepted as it provided a magnificent 786 Mbit/full-duplex data transfer speed.
Recent releases of FireWire upgrades include Apple FireWire S1600 and S3200 products launched in late 2007. IEEE 1394d project is currently under development which is aimed at producing a better FireWire transport medium.
